We are Philosophers!
Curriculum Intent
As Philosophers at Stoke Heath Primary, we take a personal interest in the religious diversity of the city we call home and where this fits into the wider world. We follow the Coventry & Warwickshire Religion and Worldviews Agreed Syllabus (2024 - 2029).
The RE curriculum reflects our core values of being learners, inclusive, honest, and respectful. It is designed to inspire curiosity and understanding by exploring profound questions about meaning, purpose, and truth. Through learning about a variety of religious and non-religious worldviews, we aim to:
Learners: Encourage deep thinking, critical analysis, and meaningful reflection, empowering children to explore big questions about themselves and the world
Inclusive: Build knowledge of diverse beliefs, cultures, and values, celebrating similarities and respecting differences to create a welcoming environment for all
Honest: Foster open, truthful discussions about identity, relationships, and worldviews, helping children engage authentically with their own perspectives and those of others
Respect: Instill empathy and mutual respect, enabling pupils to understand and appreciate the diversity of the global community they are part of
Also, through the promotion of the British Values, our pupils will become equipped with the skills to thrive and contribute to life in Stoke Heath, Coventry and 21st Century Britain.
Religion & Worldviews Approach & Mulit-Disciplinary RE
Theology
The study of beliefs about God/gods. It may involve the interpretation of sacred texts and revelations. It may also ask what religious worldviews teach about how to live a good life.
Philosophy
The study of the nature of knowledge, reality and existence. It involves using reason and logic to examine ideas that are central to religious and non-religious worldviews.
Human and Social Sciences
The study of human behaviour and interaction. It uses observation and measurement to find out how religious and nonreligious worldviews are shaped by social, cultural and envoironmental contexts. It also explores how individulas and communities put their beliefs into practice.
History
The study of past events and how religious and nonreligious worldviews have changed over time. It involves looking at primary sources (including texts and objects) to find out how people lived in the past and how they thought about the world.
At Stoke Heath, we believe it is important for our children to understand, appreciate, and respect other religions. Schools have to teach RE but parents can withdraw their children for all or part of the lessons. Before any decision is made, we would always welcome a conversation with parents about this to understand their reasons for wanting their child to miss part or all of an RE lesson, and to explain the content of our lessons.
